In July, the Dallas Morning News reported that the number of uninsured drivers in Texas dropped a sharp 38 percent from a year ago. The state gives credit in part to TexasSure, the 4-year-old vehicle insurance verification program aimed at identifying which vehicles are insured, and which are not and getting uninsured vehicles and motorists insured. The state claims that part of the decline is due to a cleanup of the database of the state’s 20 million licensed drivers.
According to TexasSure, one of every five vehicles in Texas is uninsured. Research compiled earlier this year indicated that 13 percent of Texas motorists are driving without even minimum insurance coverage, regardless of state laws requiring every driver to carry liability insurance. Since 2009, TexasSure has sent out more than 2.2 million notices to uninsured drivers, requiring them to provide proof of insurance. Those who do not comply could face a fine or suspension of their license.
Being involved in a crash with an uninsured driver can be devastating to the victims who may experience physical injuries as well as property damage. The state of Texas wants to protect Texas drivers from such a situation. TexasSure is one attempt at assuring all drivers are at least minimally covered by insurance.
To further enforce the laws, some cities, including Dallas, have ordinances requiring that uninsured vehicles stopped by police or involved in accidents be towed. Insurance companies doing business in Texas are also required to offer uninsured motorist protection as well as underinsured motorist protection. With this Texas Insurance Code mandate, drivers who do carry insurance are also paying to cover the uninsured and underinsured in the state of Texas.
