Personal injury lawyers (and any lawyer for that matter) are often given a bad rap. But don’t let the antics of a few “bad apples” spoil your opinion of personal injury lawyers. There are numerous ways personal injury lawyers contribute to our society by protecting the public.
Here are four ways personal injury lawyers protect the public and contribute to society:
Ensuring big companies can’t continue to make negligent or harmful decisions that could result in the injury or death of customers. For example: a few years ago, a swimming pool company was sued because the suction from the drain of their pools grabbed a little girl’s hair and caused her to drown. All it would have taken for this tragedy to have been prevented was the installation of a $0.25 part. 25 cents. The pool company lost the lawsuit and, as a result, the law was changed requiring these parts to be installed in all swimming pools. Were it not for this lawsuit brought on behalf of the family by a personal injury lawyer, many other children may have drowned.
Giving individuals a sense of security to pursue their life and goals knowing someone will have their back if they need it. According to the Supreme Court Chief Justice of Australia, Justice Spigelman, “Lawyers perform a critical role in the promotion of social order by the administration of the law in a manner which answers the fundamental requirements of justice, namely fair outcomes arrived by fair procedures.”
While he was speaking of lawyers in Australia, the same is true for lawyers in the United States. Attorneys who practice law with ethics and integrity should contribute to the well being of society by promoting justice through fair procedures.
Advocating for and acting as advisors for our society. Lawyers work to represent individuals and corporations in civil trials, and to promote justice in criminal trials. Attorneys work as advisors to their clients, informing them of their rights and the legal process, as well as help them navigate the frequently complex legal system.
Without lawyers, individuals would have to research the law on their own and try to understand how those decisions and laws apply to their circumstances. Attorneys dedicate their lives to understanding the law, and will help apply the law to their client’s case with the best interests of their client in mind.
Preventing clients from pursuing a lawsuit when “cooler heads” should prevail. Lawsuits are expensive, costing both time and money. There have been many times we have actually worked to convince a client not to pursue a lawsuit simply because we felt the end result would not be in the best interests of the client.
